Tropical storm developing in the Atlantic Ocean and moving towards U.S. Virgin Islands

A potential tropical cyclone is currently developing in the Atlantic Ocean, located 875 miles east-southeast of Antigua. The storm is moving west-northwest at a rapid pace and is expected to become a named tropical storm by the end of Monday. If it reaches sustained winds of 74 mph or greater, it could become the third hurricane of the season. The storm is currently producing maximum sustained winds of 30 mph. A tropical storm watch has been issued for several Caribbean islands, including Guadeloupe, St. Kitts, Nevis, and Antigua, as the storm is expected to bring damaging winds, high surf, and potential flooding. The storm is projected to reach the islands by early Tuesday afternoon and residents in surrounding areas, such as the Leeward Islands, the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, are advised to monitor the storm closely. The storm’s forecast track shows it turning northward into the Atlantic, avoiding a direct impact on the mainland U.S. The storm’s formation aligns with NOAA’s outlook for an above-normal hurricane season, with a 90% chance of increased storm activity. Colorado State University’s hurricane forecast also predicts an increased probability of major hurricane landfalls due to warm sea surface temperatures creating favorable conditions for storm development and intensification.
