A recent investigation by Al Jazeera’s Sanad verification agency has found that the Israeli attack on the al-Tabin School in Gaza City, which resulted in the deaths of more than 100 displaced Palestinians, was a calculated attempt to cause maximum casualties. The attack, which occurred during dawn prayers, was targeted at a large number of displaced people deliberately, according to the report.
The investigation, based on survivor testimonies and evidence from the scene, revealed that two guided missiles fired by the Israeli military penetrated the mosque attached to the school, resulting in extensive loss of life. The shells used in the attack were identified as American GBU-39 SDB type, manufactured and exported to Israel by Boeing.
Despite Israeli claims that the attack targeted Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters in the men’s prayer hall, the evidence presented by Sanad suggests that the attack was a deliberate and calculated attempt to cause widespread loss of life among displaced civilians seeking shelter in the school.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for the United States to reconsider its support for Israel, including weapons transfers that rights advocates believe are contributing to atrocities in Gaza. The attack also comes amid escalating tensions in the region, with the recent assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut, triggering threats of revenge from Iran and its allies.
The findings of the investigation suggest that the attack on the al-Tabin School was not aimed at targeting militants but rather at causing maximum casualties among innocent civilians, raising concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the need for accountability for such attacks.
