Google has announced new artificial intelligence features coming to Android devices, including its Gemini AI assistant. The goal is to put Google’s AI in front of consumers before Apple releases its AI on iPhones, Macs, and iPads later this year. The new features aim to improve the assistant experience, making it easier for users to complete complex tasks by speaking naturally to their devices.
Gemini can overlay on top of the app being used, allowing users to ask questions about what’s on their screen. The AI assistant can also perform tasks using information from Google apps, such as creating a workout routine based on an email from a personal trainer. Gemini’s capabilities are powered by a large AI language model installed on devices, marking a major shift from previous AI features on Android.
Google also announced its latest Pixel 9 series of smartphones, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which come with the Gemini AI features. The Pixel 9 series offers upgraded cameras, brighter screens, and the latest Tensor G4 processor to support AI use. RAM is a crucial component for running AI on smartphones, and the Pixel 9 series includes 16GB of RAM to enhance AI performance.
In addition to new smartphones, Google introduced the Pixel Watch 3, available in two sizes with features like running workout planning, recovery information, and AI-powered workout recommendations. The watch is deeply integrated with Google’s ecosystem, allowing access to Nest camera feeds, Google TV remote, offline Google Maps, and more. The Pixel Watch 3 offers up to 24 hours of battery life, or up to 36 hours with Battery Saver mode.
