Two bystanders in Michigan helped thwart separate attempted kidnappings of girls in broad daylight by the same man. Endi Bala, 23, allegedly tried to kidnap a 15-year-old girl in Clinton Township but was stopped by a bystander who physically intervened. Bala then attempted to kidnap a 7-year-old girl in Sterling Heights, but her aunt intervened and fought him for the girl’s life, with help from a driver who blocked Bala’s car. The girls were able to escape in both incidents. Bala was charged with kidnapping, reckless driving, and assault and battery in connection with the Sterling Heights incident, as well as attempted unlawful imprisonment and assault and battery in connection with the Clinton Township incident. He was arraigned and had his bond set at $2 million cash/surety. Bala was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation, and it was revealed that he had received a petition for hospitalization due to mental illness in April 2023. He has probable cause hearings scheduled for both cases in August. The bystanders who intervened, Paul Billiter and Alecia Swejkoski, acted quickly to prevent the kidnappings and are being praised for their bravery. The girls involved in the incidents are said to be coping, but one mother warned parents to be vigilant and keep a close eye on their children.
