Deputy Brandon Cunningham of the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office was killed while responding to a domestic dispute in northwestern Georgia. This tragic incident marked the first time the sheriff’s office lost a deputy in the line of duty. Cunningham and another deputy arrived at the home and were met with gunfire from inside the house, resulting in an ambush that led to Cunningham’s death. Sheriff Gary Gulledge mourned the loss of a hero and asked for prayers for Cunningham’s family and colleagues. Cunningham, a 30-year-old deputy who had been with the sheriff’s office for only two years, leaves behind two children. The female victim from the dispute also sustained gunshot wounds and was in stable condition at an Atlanta hospital. The male suspect, who shot both Cunningham and the female victim before taking his own life, was not identified. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the incident. The entire sheriff’s office is grieving the loss of Deputy Cunningham, who was described as a great deputy and a good young man.
