Mediators in Sudan War Applaud New Commitments to Humanitarian Access

International mediators participating in talks aimed at ending the war in Sudan have praised decisions made by the warring sides to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian relief to the country. The mediators, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Nations among others, commended the commitment of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to cooperate with humanitarian deliveries in Darfur and Kordofan states. They also welcomed the Sudanese Armed Forces’ decision to open the Adre border crossing with Chad for three months.

The ongoing war in Sudan, which began last year, has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian and displacement crises. More than 25 million people in Sudan are facing acute hunger, and a cholera outbreak has killed at least 316 people. The talks in Geneva aim to end the fighting and alleviate the suffering in the country.

The United States has been playing a leading role in the peace talks, calling on the Sudanese Armed Forces to join the negotiations. The US Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, praised the opening of the Adre border crossing as a crucial result at a time when humanitarian efforts are needed most.

Efforts to bring Sudan under civilian and democratic rule after the removal of longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir have faced challenges. The military staged a coup against the civilian government in 2021, leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. The fighting between the army and the RSF escalated, further complicating the peace process.

As the negotiations continue, the international community remains hopeful for a resolution to the conflict in Sudan and for the delivery of crucial humanitarian aid to those in need.
