A man in his 40s sustained serious injuries after being struck by a whale while in a tinny boat off the coast of Coolangatta near the border of Queensland and New South Wales. The incident occurred on Sunday morning when the man was unexpectedly hit by the whale’s tail, knocking him unconscious. Jetski riders in the area called emergency services to assist the man, who was eventually brought to shore by paramedics and taken to Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment of facial and spinal injuries. Thankfully, the man remained in his boat and was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident, which likely prevented a worse outcome. Queensland police are reminding all boaties to always wear life jackets while on the water. The Queensland Ambulance Service reported that the man is currently in stable condition. This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of encountering marine wildlife, even unintentionally, and the importance of taking necessary safety precautions while out on the water.
