Democratic nominee Kamala Harris is leading former President Donald Trump by 3-6 points ahead of the party convention in Chicago, according to recent opinion polls. Harris is ahead of Trump among both registered voters and likely voters in a two-way race, and also leads in a five-way race that includes other candidates like Robert F. Kennedy and Jill Stein.
In the battleground states key to the election outcome, Harris and Trump are tied 50-50. Harris’s entrance into the race has energized Democratic voters after months of poor polling for President Joe Biden, who dropped his re-election bid last month.
On a campaign trail in Pennsylvania, Harris emphasized the importance of earning the votes of American people and considered her campaign as the underdogs. Trump, on the other hand, criticized Harris on various issues including inflation and fracking, while launching personal attacks on her.
The upcoming Democratic National Convention will provide an opportunity for Democrats to display unity and drum up enthusiasm among voters. Prominent figures such as Biden, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Michelle Obama are scheduled to speak at the convention.
However, there may be demonstrations against the Biden administration’s support for the war in Gaza on the sidelines of the convention. Delegates are pushing for an embargo on US arms sales to Israel, although the Democratic platform does not mention the Palestinian death toll or call for a halt to US arms shipments to Israel.
