Hillary Clinton remains composed amidst chants from supporters of Trump

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, criticizing former President Donald Trump for his legal troubles. The crowd responded with chants of “lock him up,” in a twist on the “lock her up” chant from Trump’s 2016 campaign against Clinton. Clinton smiled and nodded through the chants, refusing to engage.

The chants came after Clinton mocked Trump for appearing to fall asleep during his hush-money trial in Manhattan, where he was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The crowd went wild as she criticized Trump for this, with Vice President Kamala Harris later trying to curb similar chants at her campaign rallies.

Clinton’s speech inspired the Democratic delegates, with references to Harris’ historic candidacy and a call for unity and strength. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s wife cried during Clinton’s remarks, while Walz himself mouthed “wow.”

Trump is facing pending federal criminal charges for his involvement in the events of January 6 and interference in the 2020 election, and his sentence for the hush-money conviction is scheduled for next month. Legal analysts predict a non-violent, first-time offender like Trump is unlikely to receive a prison term for these charges. Clinton’s powerful speech was a rallying cry for unity and progress in America.
