In Lebanon, a wave of communication device explosions targeted members of the militant group Hezbollah, resulting in serious injuries for around 40 to 50 people, including some who lost both eyes. Dr. Elias Warrak, an eye doctor who treated these patients, described the situation as a nightmare, with an unprecedented number of eye injuries from the explosions. Thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah operatives exploded across the country, killing at least 37 people and injuring nearly 3,000, mostly civilians.
Warrak mentioned that he was able to save one eye for some patients, but unfortunately, others lost both eyes. These injuries included patients who had shrapnel removed from their brains by neurosurgeons. The doctor observed that the pattern of injuries indicated that the explosions were directed towards people’s faces, leading to severe eye injuries. Hezbollah blamed Israel for the blasts, while Israel did not directly claim responsibility or comment on the attacks.
In response to the explosions, Israel launched a new wave of attacks targeting Hezbollah’s capabilities and infrastructure in Lebanon. The attacks caused fear among people about using electronic devices, and tensions escalated further when Israel reportedly killed a top Hezbollah official in Beirut. Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, acknowledged the severity of the situation in a televised address.
Warrak expressed the devastating impact of the injuries on him as a human being, as he rushed between hospitals to care for the injured. The significant number of eye injuries in such a short period was unprecedented for him, highlighting the tragic consequences of the recent violence in Lebanon.
