Less than 24 hours after CNN published a report on comments made by Mark Robinson, the Republican candidate for governor of North Carolina, on a pornographic website, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) unveiled new advertisements linking him to former President Donald Trump. The DNC plans to launch digital advertisements and billboards highlighting Trump’s praise of Robinson, hoping to cut into Trump’s support in North Carolina, a state that hasn’t been won by a Democratic presidential candidate since 2008. The ads will target North Carolina voters on YouTube and Facebook, as well as feature billboards in key cities across the state. The digital ads and billboards feature quotes from Trump praising Robinson as an “outstanding” and “incredible gentleman.” Robinson has faced criticism for racist and antisemitic comments made on a message board, but has dismissed the allegations as “tabloid trash.” The DNC’s efforts to link Robinson to Trump, who narrowly won North Carolina in 2020, are seen as a crucial strategy in flipping the state in the upcoming election. Democrats have focused heavily on North Carolina as a battleground state, pouring in millions of dollars for advertisement spending and hosting rallies by the Harris campaign. Recent polling showed a close race between Harris and Trump in the state.
