United Nations warns that escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah could lead to a devastating conflict | Israel-Palestine conflict News

In a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, UN officials expressed concern over the escalating violence between Israel and Iran-aligned groups Hamas and Hezbollah, warning of the potential for a more devastating conflict if the situation continues to escalate. Rosemary DiCarlo, UN political affairs chief, urged for diplomacy and called for member states to use their influence to prevent further violence.

Recent attacks in Lebanon, including an air raid in Beirut that killed at least 14 people, have heightened tensions in the region. The Israeli military claimed they were targeting top Hezbollah commanders, while Hezbollah has not confirmed these deaths. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, stated that the attack on Hezbollah communication devices violated international law and could be considered a war crime.

Turk called for an independent investigation into the attacks and for those responsible to be held accountable. The Deputy US Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood, emphasized the importance of compliance with international humanitarian law and the need to protect civilians in densely populated areas.

The situation has led to tens of thousands of people being evacuated from their homes on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border. Hezbollah’s support for Gaza in its conflict with Israel has added to the volatile situation, with fears of a devastating war looming. The international community is urging all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions and lead to a larger conflict.
