The United Nations General Assembly recently adopted a resolution calling for Israel to end its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory within a year. The resolution, with 124 in favor, 12 against, and 43 abstained, has been hailed as a victory for Palestinian advocacy but also highlights the hypocrisy of some countries. The resolution reaffirmed the International Court of Justice’s ruling that Israel’s occupation is illegal and its settlements on Palestinian land must be dismantled.
Despite clear international law condemning occupation, some countries, including the US and UK, have voted against or abstained from supporting the resolution. This inconsistency in condemning violations by Israel while supporting actions against other occupations raises concerns about the integrity of the global legal framework.
The US, a long-time supporter of Israel, has been accused of complicity in Israeli war crimes, while also condemning Russian occupation of Ukraine. Similarly, the UK and Germany have been criticized for their support of Israeli occupation despite concerns about human rights violations.
This double standard in foreign policy not only deepens global divisions but also undermines the principles of justice and accountability. If violations by powerful countries like Israel continue to be shielded from consequences, it sets a dangerous precedent for future disregard of international law.
To restore faith in international law and prevent a descent into a lawless world, countries must prioritize human rights over strategic interests and hold each other accountable for their actions. Consistent application of international law is essential to upholding justice and preventing further cycles of violence and oppression. Ultimately, a unified commitment to justice is needed to ensure a more just and accountable global order.
