Springfield-based Haitian group accuses Trump and Vance of filing false criminal charges for pet claims.

Guerline Jozef, the leader of the Haitian Bridge Alliance, filed criminal charges against former President Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance over false claims they made about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. The charges included disrupting public services, making false alarms, complicity, telecommunications harassment, and aggravated menacing. The group’s attorney cited inaction from a prosecuting attorney in allowing Jozef to file the charges. Both Trump and Vance continued to spread debunked claims despite city officials stating they were false. The accusations led to over 33 bomb threats in Springfield, including threats to the mayor. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine also refuted claims of Haitian immigrants settling unlawfully in the city in an op-ed published in The New York Times. Despite these responses, Trump and Vance persisted in spreading false information on social media and at rallies. City police clarified that there were no credible reports of Haitian immigrants harming pets. The Trump-Vance campaign communications director defended their claims by criticizing the immigration system overseen by Kamala Harris. The charges filed by Jozef aimed to hold Trump and Vance accountable for their actions under the rule of law.
