A recent NBC News national poll found that two in three voters believe that the country is on the “wrong track” as the election approaches, with 65% of registered voters surveyed feeling this way. The poll also revealed that the cost of living is a major concern for voters, with 66% feeling that their family’s income is falling behind. Views on the country’s direction are heavily divided along party lines, with 92% of Republicans believing the country is on the wrong track, compared to 36% of Democrats and 70% of independents.
The pessimism about the country’s direction has led to relatively low levels of enthusiasm about the upcoming election, with only 65% of voters marking themselves as very interested in the election, a 10-point drop from the same point in the 2020 election. This negativity about the country’s direction has historically been detrimental to the party in power, as seen in past elections.
Regarding potential candidates for change, Vice President Kamala Harris has an advantage over former President Donald Trump, with 47% of voters believing that Harris represents change better than Trump. The poll was conducted from September 13-17 and surveyed 1,000 registered voters, with an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
