Tens of thousands of people are fleeing from Lebanon to Syria as Israel continues to bombard Hezbollah targets. The International Organisation for Migration reports that more than 200,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon since Hezbollah started firing rockets into northern Israel in support of Hamas during the Gaza war. The Lebanese health ministry states that 1,540 people have been killed in Lebanon during this time, with almost half of them in the last week due to Israeli airstrikes.
Israel has escalated its assault on Lebanese targets, aiming to eliminate Hezbollah’s military capabilities and senior commanders. Top Israeli officials have threatened to repeat the destruction of Gaza in Lebanon if Hezbollah’s attacks continue. Incoming fire from Lebanon into Israel has resulted in injuries, with the Israeli military intercepting drones and projectiles.
An Israeli airstrike in Syria killed five Syrian army soldiers and injured another, as tensions continue to rise in the region. The US, France, and other allies have proposed a 21-day ceasefire, which Lebanon’s foreign minister supports, criticizing Israel for the destruction of border villages. However, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has stated that they will continue to strike Hezbollah until their goals are achieved. The Israeli military has mobilized tanks and armoured vehicles towards the northern border with Lebanon and called up reservists. The situation remains volatile as the conflict between Israel, Lebanon, Hezbollah, and other regional actors intensifies.
