A man was fatally attacked by several pit bull mixed dogs in Albany, New York, prompting a police investigation into possible charges. The incident occurred when the victim, identified as James Provost, was attacked by up to nine mixed-breed pit bulls in a backyard next to their residence. An officer on the scene shot and killed one of the dogs to stop the attack, with the others dispersing. The homeowner, who is different from the dogs’ caretaker, was not present at the time of the incident.
A total of 24 pit bulls, including 15 puppies, were found at the home and taken by the humane society for investigation. Authorities are considering whether the dogs should be released or euthanized, as there are concerns about their licensing status and potential danger. The police had previously executed a search warrant at the home for suspected drug activity, leading to the removal of some dogs which were later released.
The police chief, Eric Hawkins, stated that the investigation is ongoing, and they are working closely with the district attorney’s office to determine appropriate criminal charges. The circumstances surrounding the presence of so many dogs at the residence and the exact cause of the attack are still unclear. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and management of pit bulls in the community, especially given the tragic outcome of this attack.
