Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has requested additional security measures similar to those provided to a sitting president due to increased threats against his life. The campaign reached out to White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients for military assets, armored cars, protection while flying, and temporary airspace restrictions. President Joe Biden directed the Secret Service to provide the highest level of protection for Trump. The campaign denied requesting special forces service members but confirmed asking for protection against potential drone attacks.
Trump has faced alleged assassination attempts and threats from Iran, prompting his campaign to be more cautious and use evasive maneuvers. The campaign also requested to use planes that detect and deter threats. The requests have not been addressed promptly, according to a source. However, the Secret Service stated that Trump is receiving the highest levels of protection, including support from the Department of Defense.
The Department of Defense provides aid for Trump’s protection, including explosive ordnance disposal, canine units, and airlift transportation. The Secret Service also uses advanced technology systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles and counter unmanned aerial surveillance systems. The Pentagon and Secret Service are concerned about violating federal law by providing more assets to Trump’s campaign, as it may be perceived as using the military for domestic purposes. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved increased support for candidates, including explosive experts and technicians, overseen by U.S. Northern Command. It is similar to the support provided for major events like political conventions.
