A man was fatally shot and nine other people were wounded, including three children, after two groups fired at each other following the Tennessee State University homecoming parade in Nashville. The shooting occurred as people were leaving the parade but before the Tennessee State Tigers-Eastern Illinois Panthers game. Police are investigating the incident and believe at least one person who is in the hospital fired shots. Handguns were believed to have been used, with police finding one gun in the street. Some of the injured individuals are known to police from past interactions. The shooting was unexpected given the large number of police officers and public safety officials present at the event.
Three people were also taken to hospitals after being trampled by a crowd during an argument that escalated into a fight at Nissan Stadium, where the homecoming football game was underway. Witnesses, including recent high school graduate Jashawna Rucker, described the chaos and panic that ensued after the gunshots were heard. Rucker expressed sadness for those who were injured and for the person who died, emphasizing the impact of such violence on communities. Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell condemned the violence and expressed outrage at a senseless act that marred what was supposed to be a joyous celebration. Tennessee State University officials confirmed the separate incident at Nissan Stadium and acknowledged the disruption caused by the shooting and ensuing panic.
