China conducted large-scale military drills around Taiwan as a warning to “independence forces” on the island following criticism of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te’s speech. The drills called “Joint Sword-2024B” involved the Chinese army, navy, air force, and rocket force testing joint operations capability. The exercises were meant to send a stern warning to “Taiwan Independence” forces and safeguard state sovereignty and national unity. Taiwan’s National Defense Ministry and Mainland Affairs Council condemned the drills as irrational and provocative, reiterating Taiwan’s commitment to democracy and freedom. Lai stated that Taiwan and China were not subordinate to each other, emphasizing Taiwan’s dedication to resisting annexation and encroachment on sovereignty. Chinese officials accused Lai of advancing Taiwan independence for selfish political interests. Despite the tensions, most people in Taiwan believe China is unlikely to invade in the next five years. China has increased military activities around Taiwan in recent years, sending military planes and ships toward the island almost daily. The situation remains tense due to conflicting views on Taiwan’s sovereignty and autonomy.
