Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter has once again requested the Supreme Court to review an appeal regarding federal family planning funding. This comes after a federal appeals court ruled against the state’s decision to cut Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood clinics in 2016. The appeal is based on the argument that the clinics have a right to challenge the funding cuts under Medicaid law.
In 2016, Oklahoma attempted to halt funding to Planned Parenthood clinics after controversial videos were released by anti-abortion activists. However, the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the state could not deny funding to the clinics based on their affiliation with abortion services.
Attorney General Hunter has argued that the federal appeals court’s decision goes against previous Supreme Court rulings on similar cases. He believes that the state should have the authority to decide how Medicaid funds are allocated, especially when it comes to organizations like Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood has stated that the funding cuts would have a significant impact on women’s access to healthcare services, especially for low-income individuals who rely on Medicaid for their medical needs. The organization has been a controversial topic in the political sphere, with debates over abortion and women’s rights at the forefront.
The Supreme Court has not yet indicated whether they will review the appeal. However, Attorney General Hunter remains hopeful that the court will reconsider the case and give states more control over Medicaid funding decisions. Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health organizations will be closely watching the outcome of this appeal.
