Durant Animal Shelter under scrutiny for alleged poor conditions | Oklahoma News

Durant Animal Control is facing criticisms regarding the conditions of their shelter, with concerns raised about the living conditions of the animals. People like McKenzie Jessie have described the shelter as a run-down shed with animals left in their own filth on hot concrete. City officials, however, are aware of the issues and are already working on finding alternatives to improve the situation. City Manager Pam Polk mentioned the need for a bigger and better space to house the growing number of animals in the city, estimating that a new shelter would cost $1.3 million. In the meantime, Animal Control staff are taking steps to better supervise the animals, with plans to have workers on-site during the daytime and patrols to look for stray animals. Interim police Chief Joe Clark is overseeing these efforts to ensure the animals’ well-being. Additionally, McKenzie Jessie is taking her own initiative to organize a group of volunteers to help improve the shelter. The community and city officials are coming together to address the issues and work towards providing a suitable and caring environment for the animals in need.
