Legal action taken against Enid facility following abuse accusations.

A lawsuit has been filed against Liberty Oklahoma Corporation, the operator of the Greer Center in Enid, following reports of brutal abuse by caretakers towards residents with intellectual disabilities and mental illness. The lawsuit claims that the abuse, which includes allegations of waterboarding, choking, and beatings, has been ongoing for years and was carefully covered up through intimidation and manipulation.

Since the initial allegations surfaced in April 2022, six people have been arrested, and eight have been fired from the facility. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of a resident admitted for care at the facility, describes horrific acts of abuse and names Liberty’s administrators and CEO as defendants. The abuse is said to have included residents being choked until unconscious and beaten, as well as the encouragement of residents to abuse each other.

Additional details released during the investigation suggest that much of the abuse occurred after 5 p.m. when “important people are gone,” and an employee would serve as a lookout outside the room where the abuse was happening. The lawsuit sheds light on the extent of the abuse and the alleged orchestration to keep it hidden. The case is ongoing, and further investigations and legal actions are expected as more details emerge.
