Raymond Childs III, a 21-year-old man from Indianapolis, was convicted of six counts of murder, including the deaths of five people, which included family members and a pregnant woman, in a shooting that took place in January 2021. The attack stemmed from an argument over Childs staying out late. Childs methodically went from room to room, shooting the victims, killing his father, stepmother, stepsiblings, and his brother’s girlfriend who was nearly due to give birth. His 15-year-old brother was also shot but survived by fleeing the house.
Childs’ first trial ended in a mistrial after a witness verbally confronted him in front of the jury. However, in his recent trial, he was found guilty after three hours of jury deliberation. Prosecutors praised the verdict as providing justice for the victims of the horrific crime.
Childs faces 40 to 65 years in prison for each murder count, 20 to 40 years for attempted murder, and one to six years for carrying a handgun without a license. His sentencing is scheduled for January 7. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office expressed gratitude towards law enforcement, witnesses, and the trial team for their dedication to seeking justice for the victims despite facing adversity.
The outcome of the trial brings closure for the family and friends of the victims who tragically lost their lives in the senseless and unfathomable tragedy.
