Suspect in Oklahoma cold case murder captured in Natchitoches Parish

Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the United States Marshal Fugitive Apprehension Team, recently arrested Mary K. Ballard, a Natchitoches woman wanted for a 2012 Cold Case Murder in Pittsburgh County, Oklahoma. The arrest was made without incident at a residence on Sisson Road. Ballard has been charged with one count of out-of-state fugitive and one count of first-degree murder in connection with the Oklahoma investigation. She is currently in custody at the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center awaiting extradition.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has been leading the investigation into the murder case, which involved the suspicious disappearance of Barbara Durant, 54, in 2012. Durant’s remains were later found in rural Wilburton, Oklahoma, and her cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound. Mary Ballard and another suspect, Billy Thomason, were both charged with first-degree murder in connection with Durant’s death.

Thomason was already in custody on unrelated charges when Ballard was arrested in Natchitoches. Major J. Byles of the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office expressed hope that Ballard’s arrest would bring closure to the victim’s family. Ballard had been living in Natchitoches Parish for a few years prior to her arrest. The investigation into the case is ongoing, with authorities working to bring both suspects to justice for their alleged involvement in Durant’s murder.
