Former Oklahoma Congressman Mickey Edwards recently addressed a political science class at Oklahoma City Community College, where he urged young people to make independent choices about candidates rather than being blindly loyal to a political party. Edwards emphasized the importance of listening to what candidates are actually saying and not just following party lines.
Reflecting on his time in Congress, Edwards noted that politics has become more divisive and hostile in recent years, especially since the rise of Donald Trump. He highlighted the need for civility and bipartisan cooperation, recalling a time when Democrats and Republicans could be friends and work together for the good of the country.
Discussing his decision to leave the Republican Party, Edwards cited his opposition to Trump’s behavior and values, which he found limiting and indecent. He expressed shock at the lack of dissent within party ranks, noting that even during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, he voted against certain proposals that he disagreed with.
Speaking about the events of January 6th, when the U.S. Capitol was stormed by a pro-Trump mob, Edwards condemned the attack as an act of treason. He likened the insurrectionists to an enemy army and emphasized the need to defend the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
Edwards’ visit to Oklahoma also included delivering a keynote address at The Oklahoma Academy’s 2024 Town Hall in Tulsa. His message of political independence, civility, and commitment to democratic values resonated with the audience of students and community members.
