Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters is demanding more than $474 million in reimbursement from the Biden-Harris administration for the financial impact that illegal immigration has had on Oklahoma schools. Walters claims that Vice President Kamala Harris’s leadership on the border has resulted in chaos in schools, with resources being diverted from legal students to those who are illegal immigrants. Walters criticized Harris’s open border policy, blaming it for issues such as fentanyl entering schools and even a terrorist being arrested in a school due to lack of border control.
Walters referred to Harris as “the border czar” and joined other Republicans in condemning the administration’s handling of border security. He also pushed back against the administration’s changes to Title IX, which he believes puts women in danger. Walters has called for a complete overhaul of Oklahoma’s school curriculum to instill a love of country and understanding of the American founding in students.
The issue of illegal immigration and its impact on schools has become a significant point of contention ahead of the 2024 presidential election, with the possibility of non-residents voting also under scrutiny. The recent Supreme Court ruling allowing Virginia to remove ineligible noncitizens from its voter rolls has been hailed as a victory for election fairness by Gov. Glenn Youngkin. Amidst these debates, Walters’s demands for reimbursement highlight the financial strain that illegal immigration is placing on Oklahoma schools and taxpayers.
