Police officers who defended Capitol on Jan. 6 commend Vice President Harris for securing area of Trump’s rally

Kamala Harris held a rally at the Ellipse near the White House, where Donald Trump had urged his supporters to “fight like hell” on Jan. 6, 2021. Officer Daniel Hodges, who had fought off the pro-Trump mob that day, was on duty for both events. He praised Harris for choosing the location to contrast the events of Jan. 6 with her campaign message. Hodges was glad that the rally was less eventful than Jan. 6, where he was assaulted by the mob.

During her speech, Harris talked about Jan. 6, referencing the injured officers. Craig Sicknick, brother of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick who died after the attack, spoke at the rally, criticizing Trump for inciting the violence. Gonell, a retired U.S. Capitol Police officer who was assaulted during the attack, also attended the rally and praised Harris for her positive message.

Gonell, who has campaigned for Harris, emphasized the importance of not accepting political violence like what happened on Jan. 6. He hopes that people will choose to defeat Trump in future elections. The rally served as a way to honor the sacrifices of those who were injured or killed during the attack and to advocate for moving forward in a positive and hopeful way.
