The fire threat in northeastern Oklahoma is high this week as drought conditions worsen and wind gusts reach up to 40 miles per hour. A burn ban is in place for 43 counties, including Tulsa, Creek, and Rogers. Violations of the ban could result in fines of up to $1,200 and/or six months in jail. Outdoor burning is prohibited, but grilling and welding over non-flammable surfaces are allowed.
In SW Oklahoma, a wildfire continues to burn in portions of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, with over 12,000 acres burned and the fire less than half contained. Relief is in sight with rain and showers expected to start on Wednesday.
The counties under the burn ban in Oklahoma include Ottawa, Delaware, Mayes, Nowata, Rogers, Washington, Wagoner, Cherokee, Adair, and many others.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant and comply with the burn ban to prevent the spread of wildfires and protect lives and property. For more information, visit the Oklahoma Forestry Services website.
