L.A. County District Attorney Gascón endorses clemency plea for Menendez brothers.

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón has announced his support for clemency for Lyle and Erik Menendez, who are serving life sentences for killing their parents in 1989. The brothers have each served 34 years and have engaged in education and rehabilitation programs while in prison. Clemency would allow their immediate release, separate from a resentencing effort also underway. The brothers, whose initial trial was televised and highly publicized, were convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole after claiming their father sexually abused them. Gascón, who is up for re-election this year, filed a motion last week seeking a resentencing that could make them eligible for parole due to their age at the time of the crimes. Attorneys for the brothers have submitted clemency requests to Governor Gavin Newsom, who has not indicated whether he is inclined to grant clemency. The brothers’ attorneys argue that they were sexually abused by their father, worked to rehabilitate themselves in prison, and would be strong candidates for clemency based on their ages and behavior. The brothers shot their parents with shotguns in 1989, leading to their conviction and life sentences. Allen Superior Court judge will decide if they will be resentenced in a hearing scheduled for December.
