Political campaigns in Oklahoma have already spent nearly $20 million this election season

Political campaigns in Oklahoma have spent a whopping $18.7 million so far in the 2024 election cycle, according to the Oklahoma Ethics Commission. Candidates themselves accounted for $16 million of the spending on various campaign expenses. Interestingly, about $2 million came from independent expenditure groups that support or denounce candidates and policies, known as dark money.

Lobbyists in Oklahoma were also active, spending $468,847 on events, gifts, and meals for lawmakers to advocate for their groups’ interests. Meals alone accounted for over half of all the money spent by lobbyists in the state.

Oklahomans can access public campaign finance information through the Oklahoma Ethics Commission website, using “The Guardian,” the state’s secure self-reporting and data compilation system.

The details of these expenditures shed light on the inner workings of politics in Oklahoma and the significant amount of money involved in influencing political decisions. With dark money and lobbyist spending playing a crucial role in shaping policies and candidates, transparency and accountability in campaign finance remain essential for a fair and democratic electoral process.
