Oklahoma Establishes ‘Office of Religious Freedom and Patriotism’

Oklahoma Launches Office of Religious and Patriotism Amid Controversy

By Michael Gryboski, Mainline Church Editor | November 13, 2024

In an effort to enhance religious freedoms within the educational system, the Oklahoma Department of Education has announced the establishment of an "Office of Religious and Patriotism." This new initiative aims to protect the rights of students, teachers, and parents to practice their faith freely and to investigate violations of religious liberty and displays of patriotism within public schools.

State Superintendent Ryan Walters stated that public schools have become pivotal battlegrounds for religious liberty erosion, attributing this decline to the influence of "the radical left" on educational policies. "The dismantling of faith and family values in public schools correlates directly with declining academic outcomes," he asserted. Walters expressed intentions to collaborate with the upcoming Trump Administration to develop educational policies focused on improving academic standards for Oklahoma children.

The office’s launch follows a contentious directive issued by Walters earlier this year, mandating public schools to incorporate the Bible into their curricula, alongside plans to allocate $3 million for purchasing Bibles for schools. These actions faced backlash, including a complaint from parents, teachers, and clergy who argue that such mandates interfere with parental rights and violate state regulations.

Critics, including the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), have condemned the new office, labeling it as a mechanism for indoctrination rather than genuine support for religious freedoms. The FFRF stated that students already possess the right to pray, describing the initiative as unnecessary.

As the Oklahoma education landscape evolves, the impact of these initiatives on students’ rights and the broader discussion of religious liberty in public schools remains to be closely monitored.
