Republican Rep. Michael McCaul reportedly stopped by police at airport for suspected intoxication

Rep. Michael McCaul, Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was briefly detained at Dulles International Airport after appearing disoriented, possibly due to mixing Ambien with alcohol. He missed his flight to Texas, leading to the encounter with police. McCaul explained the situation and was respectful throughout. He took responsibility for his actions, expressing gratitude to the officers involved. McCaul plans to seek a waiver to continue as chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee. As a long-serving member of the House, he was just re-elected to his 11th term. The incident occurred as members returned to Washington for the lame-duck session following the recent election. House Republicans met to hold leadership elections, attended by President-elect Donald Trump, who endorsed Speaker Mike Johnson’s bid for another term. McCaul has been known for his global travels on behalf of the House speaker and his previous role as chair of the House Homeland Security Committee. The spokesperson for the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the incident. McCaul apologized for the mistake and stated his commitment to learning from it and striving to be a better person.
