Investigation reveals federal law violations in Nex Benedict’s Oklahoma school district

The federal Education Department found that the Oklahoma school district where a transgender student, Nex Benedict, died this year failed to address sexual harassment allegations that may have contributed to the student’s death. The investigation was prompted by a complaint from the Human Rights Campaign, alleging that Owasso Public Schools mishandled harassment claims. The district’s practices violated Title IX regulations aimed at protecting against sex-based discrimination in federally funded schools. The investigation uncovered multiple instances of unaddressed sexual harassment allegations within the district, involving teachers grooming students and students making unwelcome sexual comments. Despite denying any violations of federal law, Owasso Public Schools agreed to voluntarily resolve the Title XI complaint. The district will be updating policies, procedures, and training to ensure compliance with Title IX regulations and maintain a non-discriminatory environment for all students. President of the Human Rights Campaign Kelley Robinson expressed disappointment in the district’s handling of the situation, stating that officials were aware of the hostile climate in their schools but chose indifference. The resolution agreement sends a message that all students, including transgender and non-binary individuals, deserve access to a quality and safe education, regardless of who is in the White House, reaffirming their rights and worth.
