Press Release: Care Center of Oklahoma Promotes Child Abuse Prevention Awareness
On Wednesday, the Care Center of Oklahoma issued a vital message to the community regarding the prevention of child abuse. Shelby Lynch, the Director of Prevention and Outreach, emphasized the importance of open communication between caregivers and children. “One of the biggest safeguards against abuse is when parents create an environment where children feel comfortable discussing difficult topics,” Lynch stated.
The Care Center highlighted that discussions about body privacy should start early. Lynch advised parents to teach children that their private areas, defined as those covered by a swimsuit, must be regarded as private. This includes using anatomically correct names for body parts to prevent confusion. “Children should understand that they have the right to say ‘no’ to any unwanted touch,” she added, stressing that this applies to interactions with family, friends, or strangers alike.
Another vital lesson discussed was distinguishing between secrets and surprises. Lynch explained that surprises are positive experiences that bring joy, while secrets could evoke feelings of sadness or fear. Educating children on these differences can empower them to seek help if they feel uneasy.
For those who have endured abuse, the Care Center conveyed a message of hope. Lynch reassured that surviving abuse doesn’t equate to a hopeless future. With the support of caring adults, recovery and healing are possible.
All Oklahomans are reminded that they are mandated reporters when it comes to suspected child abuse. If anyone suspects a child is being abused or neglected, they are urged to contact the Department of Human Services or call 911 if a child is in immediate danger. The Care Center stands firm in its mission to protect and empower children throughout the state.
