Oklahoma Voice, a publication covering Oklahoma politics and government, recently won four awards in the Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists Pro Chapter’s 2024 awards. The Voice took home awards for best print website, education coverage, commentary, and overall outstanding print website.
One of the highlights was reporter Nuria Martinez-Keel winning first place in the print category for outstanding spot news for her coverage of a controversial Western Heights School Board meeting in Oklahoma City. The meeting drew a large crowd divided over the decision to hire a principal who had previously performed as a drag queen.
Martinez-Keel also won third place in the print category for outstanding general news for her reporting on eight textbook publishers and curriculum providers withdrawing from consideration amid a politicized fight over school curriculum in Oklahoma. Officials noted the high number of withdrawals.
Editor Janelle Stecklein also received recognition, taking home second place for outstanding print editorial for a column she wrote in 2023 about why Oklahoma might be losing out on bids for businesses.
Oklahoma Voice is part of States Newsroom, the nation’s largest state-focused nonprofit news organization, providing daily content that is available to republish for free with attribution and without paywalls. The publication’s success at the SPJ awards highlights their commitment to quality journalism.
