OCPA President Jonathan Small responded to false suggestions made during a House legislative study on the Judicial Nominating Commission (JNC) in Oklahoma. Small clarified that OCPA was invited to participate in the study but declined due to restrictions on advocating for abolishing the JNC. The study was led by state Representative Erick Harris, who confirmed that opponents of the JNC were invited but did not participate.
OCPA has been advocating for replacing the JNC process with a system based on the U.S. Constitution for selecting judges. This system would allow gubernatorial nomination of qualified candidates with legislative confirmation required. Small criticized the pro-JNC propaganda during the study and described it as a “stacked” performance.
The false statement made during the study was deemed as the high point of the performance by Small. The original OCPA Staff Report can be accessed online for further information. Additionally, a recently released assessment of controversial decisions by Oklahoma’s Supreme Court Justices can be found at www.OklaJudges.com.
The press release highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the JNC and efforts by OCPA to advocate for a change in the judicial selection process in Oklahoma. The statement by Small sheds light on the challenges faced by organizations seeking to bring about policy reforms in the state.
