A 44-year-old Florida woman, Veronica Torres, has been charged with filing a false public assistance claim after using her mother’s identity to apply for hurricane aid and receiving almost $8,000. Torres claimed she was forced to move out of her home due to hurricane damage, but her appearance raised suspicions when she went to pick up the check, with a city employee noting her youthful appearance and questioning her explanation of botox treatments. Torres was asked to return the next day and was subsequently arrested. She posted $2,500 bond and is currently free. The case has not yet appeared in online court records, and it is unclear if Torres has an attorney. Bradenton, where the incident took place, is a city north of Sarasota on Florida’s western coast, an area that was affected by hurricanes in September and October.
