Black users, who have been a key part of social media engagement, are now leaving X, formerly Twitter, due to issues like bots, harassment, and partisan ads related to the polarizing presidential election. This mass exodus has raised concerns about the future of “Black Twitter,” a group of users known for discussing social issues and pop culture. Many Black social media users are turning to alternative platforms like Bluesky to avoid the problems they encountered on X.
Elon Musk’s ownership of X has led to changes that have alienated many users, including Black social media enthusiasts. The platform has become less user-friendly, with an increase in hate speech and difficulty in blocking unwanted content. Musk’s support of Trump and the spread of misinformation on the platform have also prompted users to leave.
Bluesky, a new alternative platform, has seen a surge in Black users looking for a more welcoming and safe space for online interaction. Users like Rudy Fraser have created Blacksky, a curated feed focused on Black-centered content, to provide a safer and more inclusive experience for Black users. The community-owned content moderation tools on Bluesky allow for swifter action against guideline abuses, setting it apart from X.
Many Black Twitter users are finding a new home on Bluesky, Threads, Spill, and other alternative platforms. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of Black Twitter, users are optimistic about finding ways to recreate the positive aspects of their online community on new social media platforms.
