Oklahoma CareerTech Expands Apprenticeship Program with $562 Million Grant

Oklahoma CareerTech is set to broaden its apprenticeship program, significantly increasing opportunities for students and employers statewide, backed by a substantial $562 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. The initiative aims to establish a robust connection between education and industry, facilitating career pathways tailored to meet the needs of local employers.

According to Justin Siler, Oklahoma CareerTech’s statewide work-based learning liaison, apprenticeships offer a structured, industry-driven career pathway. These programs allow students to earn wages while acquiring specific skills under the guidance of experienced mentors, ultimately leading to recognized certifications in their chosen fields. “It’s a very intentional way for someone to grow their career pathway options,” Siler noted, highlighting the alignment of educational and employment trajectories.

Local businesses, such as Ironclad Heating and Air, are already reaping the benefits of this initiative. Owner Dustin Kunnanz shared how apprenticeships have positively impacted his company’s growth. “It’s a big impact on our business. We’re really growing and expanding,” he said, noting that several of his employees are currently participating as apprentices. This engagement accelerates their professional development and enhances their contributions to the workforce.

The federal grant empowers CareerTech to explore new engagements with various employers and sectors, broadening the scope of the apprenticeship program. Siler emphasized that this funding would create opportunities for employers previously unserved, thus fostering a more extensive network of industry partnerships.

Through this expansion, Oklahoma CareerTech aims to open doors for more students and employers, ensuring that the future workforce is equipped with the skills needed for lifelong career success, bridging the gap between education and real-world application.
