Xi agrees to collaboration with Trump administration while meeting Biden in Peru

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his willingness to work with the incoming U.S. administration led by President-elect Donald Trump as he met with outgoing President Joe Biden in Lima, Peru. Xi emphasized the importance of maintaining a stable and sustainable relationship between China and the U.S. despite any disagreements. The meeting between Xi and Biden comes at a crucial time, just before Trump takes office. Trump has proposed implementing significant tariffs on Chinese imports, which China opposes. In addition, he plans to appoint officials who have taken tough stances on China to key positions in his administration.

The discussions between Xi and Biden also touched on issues such as cyber crimes, trade, Taiwan, and China’s support for Russia. Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te is planning a visit to the U.S., which is likely to anger Beijing, as China considers Taiwan its own territory. Taiwan is reliant on the U.S. for support and arms supply. China’s economic concerns due to Biden’s trade policies were also raised during the talks, as Biden intends to limit U.S. investment in certain Chinese sectors.

China is currently engaging in a diplomatic push in Latin America, including signing trade agreements and infrastructure projects. This initiative is seen as a potential concern by the U.S., which worries about China expanding its influence in the region. Despite these challenges, Xi is expected to receive a positive reception in Latin America, signaling China’s growing presence in the region. The U.S. remains committed to its relationships in Latin America, but faces competition from China in terms of economic and strategic influence.
