President-elect Donald Trump has selected Brendan Carr to be chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Carr, the top Republican commissioner on the FCC, is known for his advocacy for free speech and his opposition to regulatory measures that he believes stifle Americans’ freedoms and economic growth. Trump praised Carr for his fight against the “regulatory onslaught” that he claims has hurt job creators and innovators in America.
Carr’s views on the role of the FCC are outlined in the conservative playbook Project 2025, where he argues for reining in Big Tech, promoting national security, unleashing economic prosperity, and ensuring accountability and good governance within the agency. He has expressed concerns about TikTok’s ties to China and called for potential reforms to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which provides protections to social media companies for moderating content on their platforms.
The FCC is a bipartisan agency composed of five commissioners serving five-year terms, with a limit of three commissioners from the same party. Carr’s appointment as chairman signals a shift in leadership at the FCC that may impact the agency’s approach to regulating communication platforms and promoting free speech and economic growth in the United States.
