Oklahoma CareerTech Takes the Lead in Expanding Apprenticeship Programs
Oklahoma City, OK – Oklahoma CareerTech is spearheading efforts to enhance apprenticeships in the state, benefiting both employers and job seekers. According to State Director Brent Haken, the agency’s unique role in Oklahoma’s educational system positions it perfectly to promote these programs, which connect education to employment effectively.
The initiative coincides with National Apprenticeship Week, running from November 17-23, highlighting the vital relationship between career training and workforce development. During this week, various organizations, including employers and educational institutions, will showcase U.S. Department of Labor-registered apprenticeships and Oklahoma-certified apprenticeship models.
Haken emphasized that “apprenticeships are a highly effective way to connect education and careers,” which aligns well with the mission of the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education since its inception. He noted that these apprenticeships offer industry-driven pathways enabling employers to build a skilled workforce while providing individuals with paid experiences and progressive wage increases.
H.L. Baird, the statewide work-based learning liaison at CareerTech, outlined that successful apprenticeships foster partnerships between apprentices, educational providers, and employers. This collaborative approach ensures apprentices gain the necessary education, experience, and skills that align with employer needs.
The apprenticeship framework allows individuals to earn while they learn, creating a pathway toward career advancement and financial stability. Current data indicates that 90% of those completing registered apprenticeships retain employment post-training and often earn above-average wages.
Through its extensive network of technology centers and partnerships with state education agencies, CareerTech is poised to provide valuable support to employers and apprentices alike.
