A man in New Hampshire surrendered nearly 1,000 pet mice to an animal shelter due to rapid rodent reproduction. Initially claiming to have 150 mice, it was later revealed he had 150 tubs full of them. The mice were not separated by sex, leading to uncontrollable breeding as many of the females were already pregnant. The mice were living in filthy conditions and the shelter is seeking assistance from the community to care for and find homes for the large number of mice. The New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has never seen a situation like this before and is urging people to adopt, foster, or donate to help with the overwhelming number of fancy mice in need of care. The shelter is hoping to find homes for the mice quickly to prevent further growth in numbers. The mice are described as highly social, preferring to live in groups and easy to care for. Many are already available for adoption, while some are on pregnancy watch or require veterinary care. The shelter is working with various organizations to find new homes for the mice and ensure they receive proper care.
