Columbia Police Department considers new technology purchase to expedite gun-identification process

The Columbia Police Department is seeking approval to purchase gun identification technology to help solve violent crimes in the city. The department is requesting $208,934 in seized funds to acquire the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBN) technology, which allows police to link shell casings to specific guns. Currently, the department faces delays in obtaining results from the system, but having the technology in-house would significantly speed up the process. Assistant Chief Lance Bolinger highlighted the importance of using technology to track leads in homicide investigations, especially when witnesses are reluctant to provide information. The partnership with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) will enable police to link crimes to specific individuals, allowing for a focused approach in addressing violent acts in the community. Bolinger expressed the importance of addressing issues before they escalate to homicides, and believes the technology could help increase clearance rates for gun crimes. If approved, it will take approximately six months before the machine is fully functional. The department hopes that the use of this technology will not only help solve current cases but also prevent future violent crimes in the community.
