IDNR advises hunters to be cautious when using technology while in the field

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters to be cautious when using technology in the field. The use of drones for hunting or wildlife recovery is strictly prohibited in the state, as it goes against fair chase principles and hunting ethics. Violators may face enforcement action, including equipment seizure and forfeiture.

Artificial intelligence is also being used to provide answers to hunting regulations, but it is advised for hunters to rely on primary sources like the Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations and the state wildlife code to ensure accurate information.

While e-bikes have become a popular choice for accessing remote hunting sites, they are prohibited on IDNR-owned lands, except for public access roads or designated bike trails. Recently, Illinois Conservation Police cited a hunter for using an e-bike in the woods at the Peabody-River King State Fish and Wildlife Area in St. Clair County, due to an expired e-bike permit and other violations.

Hunters are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the rules and best practices surrounding the use of technology in hunting to ensure a safe and legal experience. For more information about hunting regulations and access, hunters can visit the IDNR’s Hunt Illinois website or contact park site offices.
