Shawnee Family Celebrates New Addition Despite Health Challenges
A Shawnee couple, Monica Martinez and Justin Morrell, are navigating the complexities of new parenthood after welcoming their daughter, Irelynne, on September 17. While the joyous occasion is typically filled with excitement and anticipation, the couple has faced an unexpected two-month wait to determine their baby’s survival due to a severe health condition.
Irelynne was born with a rare respiratory birth defect called laryngotracheal cleft, affecting approximately one in 100,000 newborns. This condition presents significant breathing difficulties, with nearly half of those affected not surviving. "You expect to go through the labor, delivery, and then straight home, but we came straight to the hospital," Martinez shared.
The couple has endured a challenging journey, needing multiple medical procedures and the expertise of numerous doctors. An open neck surgery, performed by Dr. Vikram Ramjee at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital, has significantly improved Irelynne’s condition. "We are very fortunate at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital to have such a robust system and talented staff," Dr. Ramjee stated, noting the baby’s promising recovery.
Martinez expressed, “Being a mother changes you,” and both parents find themselves overwhelmed with joy at Irelynne’s strength and vibrant personality. They are eager to bring their daughter home, hopeful for a Christmas reunion. In light of their medical expenses, the family has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with costs.
Despite their trials, Morrell and Martinez remain grateful for the care Irelynne has received and are excited to embrace their new life as a family. "She’s a really strong girl, and we’re proud of her," Morrell said.
