Article:
Oklahoma Rep. Justin Humphrey has reintroduced legislation known as the “Lauria and Ashley Act,” which aims to protect victims of domestic violence and stalking. The bill is named in honor of two young women who lost their lives as a result of domestic violence.
The legislation would create a new stalking protection order, separate from a protective order, allowing victims of stalking to take legal action against their perpetrators. It would also increase the penalty for violating a protective order to a felony offense.
Rep. Humphrey emphasized the importance of protecting victims of domestic violence and stalking, stating that the current laws in Oklahoma are insufficient in addressing these issues. He believes that the “Lauria and Ashley Act” will provide much-needed protections for victims and help prevent future tragedies.
The bill has received bipartisan support in the past and is expected to gain momentum in the current legislative session. Advocates for victims of domestic violence have also voiced their support for the legislation, stating that it is a crucial step in improving the safety and well-being of victims.
If passed, the “Lauria and Ashley Act” would provide much-needed support for victims of domestic violence and stalking in Oklahoma. Rep. Humphrey is hopeful that the bill will receive the necessary support to become law and make a positive impact in protecting victims and preventing further tragedies.
