Press Release: Cafe Kacao Brings Guatemalan Flavor to Oklahoma City
Over a decade ago, Veronica Zelada took a leap of faith, emigrating from Guatemala with her three children to open Cafe Kacao, now a beloved fixture on Classen Boulevard in Oklahoma City. Since its launch in 2011, the restaurant has transformed from a former tire shop into one of the hottest brunch spots in the U.S., celebrated for its authentic Latin fusion cuisine.
Zelada’s journey has been marked by resilience and pride, evidenced by a wall of awards and a full-page feature in her home country’s newspaper, which she cites as her most cherished recognition. Drawing inspiration from her mother’s recipes, she continues to introduce diners to traditional Guatemalan dishes, such as the popular Tikal, featuring carne asada, eggs, fried plantains, and beans.
The menu reflects a blend of culinary influences, incorporating ingredients from the U.S., Guatemala, El Salvador, and Cuba. Diners rave about the huevos rancheros, expressing their enjoyment to Zelada, who relishes the personal connections formed in her restaurant.
Her son, Luigi, has also played a key role, enhancing Cafe Kacao’s coffee selection by sourcing Guatemalan beans and creating house-made syrups. The restaurant employs dedicated baristas to ensure the highest quality espresso, further solidifying its reputation for exceptional coffee.
Zelada embodies a spirit of community service, stating, "I have a passion to cook and serve the community. I love Oklahoma." As she looks ahead to the future, plans for a second location are in the works, promising to expand the reach of her culinary vision. For now, Cafe Kacao remains a treasured destination for food lovers seeking an authentic taste of Guatemalan culture.
