Seventh eruption of the year reported at Icelandic volcano

A volcano near Iceland’s capital erupted for the seventh time in a year, spewing lava and smoke but causing no disruptions to air traffic or infrastructure. The eruption started suddenly and created a fissure nearly two miles long. This eruption was smaller than the previous one in August. Social media livestreams showed hot lava shooting into the sky. Authorities had warned of volcanic activity due to magma accumulation beneath the Reykjanes peninsula. The eruption did not affect the capital city and did not disrupt air traffic. The Blue Lagoon resort was evacuated, but there was no indication that the nearby town of Grindavik was in immediate danger. Iceland sits above a volcanic hot spot and experiences eruptions every four to five years. Experts predict repeated volcanic outbreaks in the Reykjanes area for decades or even centuries. The most disruptive eruption in recent times was the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption, which disrupted air travel for months. The current volcanic activity in Iceland has increased in frequency, with six outbreaks in 2024 alone.
